PUPS - People Understanding Pets

Book discussion, pet care, and art programs for elementary-aged students

Join us for any of these THREE different programs about dogs -- book discussion, pet care, and art!

PUPS (People Understanding Pets) is a program taught by Humane Educator Kim Schwalbach from the Decatur & Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation.

What: PUPS Book Discussion Group
When: Mondays, October 17, 24, November 7, 14, 6 - 7 pm
Where: Children's Auditorium, Decatur Public Library
Who: Students 4th grade & up

Would you like to have a book discussion with a friendly border collie named Lady Mary? Join Lady Mary and Kim as you discuss the book Pax by Sarah Pennypacker! The discussion will take place over four sessions, Mondays October 17, 24, November 7, 14, 6 - 7 pm each evening. Each participant will receive a free copy of the book to keep.

Space is limited. Advance registration required. Participants are registering to attend all four sessions. After registration, come to the Children's Desk at the Decatur Public Library to pick up your copy of the book and the first set of discussion questions.

What: PUPS Pet Care
When: Saturday, October 22, 10 - 11 am
Where: Children's Auditorium, Decatur Public Library
Who: Kids K-8th grade & their families

Meet Kim and her border collie, Lady Mary, as they teach you about:

  • taking care of your dog and other domestic pets
  • the importance of ID tags, leash, and collar
  • how we need to be kind and compassionate to our animals friends

At the end of the class everyone will get to meet Lady Mary, and each family will receive a free copy of the book The Stray Dog by Marc Simont.

Space is limited. Advance registration is required. Register just one child for the whole family.

What: PUPS Blue Dog Art Class
When: Saturday, November 5, 2 - 3 pm
Where: Children's Auditorium, Decatur Public Library
Who: Students 3rd grade & up

Join us for this guided art program, in which Kim will teach students step-by-step how to draw & paint a Blue Dog in the style of artist George Rodrigue. They can also bring a photo of their own pet (any kind!) or any pet they would like to try painting.

Space is limited. Advance registration is required.
