Book: To Stop a Warlord: My Story of Justice, Grace, and the Fight for Peace, by Shannon Sedgwick Davis
Speaker: John Schirle
To Stop a Warlord is one woman’s inspiring true story of an unlikely alliance to stop the atrocities of a warlord, even in the face of unspeakable injustice and impossible odds. As president of the Bridgeway Foundation, a human rights organization dedicated to finding peaceful solutions to armed conflict in the world, Shannon Sedgwick Davis found herself facing the challenge of bringing to justice a Ugandan warlord, Joseph Kony, who had been wreaking havoc in four countries of central Africa. With no roadmap for stopping a violent, armed group hiding in the rain forests of Africa, Davis had to resort to unconventional tactics with partners outside the circles of philanthropy and human rights. In the end they did not accomplish what they intended, but did achieve their goal.
John Schirle has been a library assistant at the Decatur Public Library since 2005. Previously he lived and worked for 7 years in central Africa, in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, so he has long-standing interest in the political and social landscape of central Africa.
Books Between Bites is sponsored monthly by the Friends of the Decatur Public Library. A speaker presents a book or topic of interest, and you do not have to read the book to come and enjoy the program. You can bring your lunch, and the coffee is always on.
