Tender Mercies (1983) PG

This tale of a broken down country musician features one of the best performances in cinema, one that earned Robert Duvall a Best Actor Oscar and cemented him as one of the most skilled performers of his generation. Duvall plays Mac, a washed up musician who let alcohol and bad decisions tank his once great career, but when he opens his heart to a widow and her daughter, he discovers a new outlook on life. This movie has a natural, believable texture that makes Tender Mercies stand out from stylized, overwrought films in the same vein, thanks in part to the excellent Best Screenplay Oscar winning script. This is a subtle, powerful movie that mines genuine emotion and superb performances. Tender Mercies is rated PG.
