Kids 2nd grade through high school, join us for Chess Club at the Decatur Public Library! Whether you're just wanting to learn or have lots of experience, you'll find helpful instruction and friends to play with.

Each session will start out with a short period of instruction, learning new chess skills, followed by time to play chess with each other. We'll begin piece by piece, learning board set up, how each piece moves, and what "check" and "checkmate" mean. We'll move on to learning about checkmate strategies, opening strategies, and positioning advantages. We might even wrap up the year with a tournament!

The program is free. Advance registration is recommended so participants can receive program reminders, updates, and information. Walk-ins are also welcome and can register then. (Just register once for the program, not each date.) Click to register.

Our program leader is Ben Steele, educator with the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension 4-H program. Ben was a teacher for 21 years and has years of experience organizing school chess clubs and tournaments.
