Dr. Zia was born in Springfield but grew up in Decatur. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1968 and the College of Medicine in Chicago four years later. He and his wife, Linda Castleman, returned to Decatur where he practiced Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, eventually becoming Chief Medical Officer at DMH. Mike is now almost retired, surveying hospitals part-time and volunteering at Crossing Healthcare. He has a life-long fascination with science fiction.

While both books fall into the science fiction category, the author has also been described as an ecological novelist. Both novels are dystopian, depicting a future where climate change has caused cataclysmic changes to our world. Overall, both books provide an interesting fictional view of a possible future state due to global warming, with suggestions for how society and humankind might respond. Robinson combines a broad knowledge of economics, science, and general trivia into engaging, relevant, and topical themes for our consideration.
