Decatur’s First Ever Zombie 5k!

Decatur’s first Zombie Run, where runners will have more obstacles than just the miles. Join the Friends of the Decatur Public Library for a Zombie 5K this June! Zombies are a hot topic these days, and they have finally made it to Decatur.
This will be a non-competitive 5K run/walk for all ages… avoiding zombies all along the route, of course. Runners have a limited number of tags that prevent them from being infected by the undead plague and must avoid the lurching zombies’ attempts to take all your flags. The route through the park is beset by zombie hoards and lone zombies roaming in search of brains. Each runner will be entered in a prize drawing, any flags a runner has left at the finish line can be turned in for additional entries. All proceeds support the Friends of the Library. The Friends fund many Library activities, some of which include: Summer Reading Programs, Vietnam Traveling Wall Memorial (coming this May), BabyTALK, Project READ, Tax Preparation Services, Holiday Programs, and the Library Gardens!
Runners: Must register by Saturday, May 25th. Registration is through Active.com or print out Registration and drop off at the library book sale or reference desk; cost is $25. All ages welcome for this non-competitive run/walk. Runners may come costumed. Race packet pickup at library at the Friends of the Library Book Sale June 8th or prior to the race at Fairview Park. You can also register in person at the Second Saturday Used Book Sale at the library on May 11th from 9:30-12:30am. Day of the event registration is available, but we cannot guarantee a t-shirt. If you registered early and did NOT sign the waiver yet, waivers will be available at packet pick up.
Zombies: Adults and teens are encouraged to volunteer as zombies. Zombies must also register, but not through Active.com. Zombie Registration forms can be emailed to ewood@decaturlibrary.org or dropped off at the library Reference Desk. Please contact Eleanor Wood at ewood@decaturlibrary.org or 217-421-9756 for more information on volunteering to be a zombie. Zombies must come in costume, attend a pre-race day planning meeting (Wednesday May 29th at 7:00pm) OR can contact Eleanor to discuss meeting topics without having to attend. Zombie registration is free, with the option to buy a t-shirt for $10, which must be paid in cash or check at the library, at the meeting, or before the race. Checks to “Friends of the Decatur Public Library”. Zombies may be teens (with parent permission), adults, or children (10 and under) IF accompanied by a zombie adult. ZooCrew will be available to paint Zombie faces pre-race at 5pm in pavilion 2 at the race.
Runners and Zombies will receive water and food at post party.
Packet pickup is Saturday morning June 8th at the library at the Friends of the Library Book Sale (9:30-12:30) and before the race (at 5:00pm) in Fairview at Pavilion #2. There is a waiver for runners that will be available at packet pickup.
