Propaganda in Film

Movies are often seen as simply entertainment or an escape from our daily lives. We do not consider the impact of plot or character in these stories on our perceptions. Yet, film has been utilized for decades to influence and alter how society perceives history and current affairs.

Join our film curator, Marc Girdler, for a series that exemplifies the use of film as propaganda and discover the impact it has had and ultimately continues to have on our world view. Marc will discuss each film’s place in the propaganda spectrum and be available from questions after the screenings. The series will begin with Starship Troopers, a military science-fiction action film adjusted to fall in line with Heinlein’s novel of the same name. Next will be a screening of Green Berets, a 1968 American war film set in Vietnam and based on the book by Robin Moore. The final film is Triumph of the Will, a Nazi propaganda film and one of the most prominent examples of its use in history. The series will be followed by a panel discussion on how propaganda has been and is used in film to influence and stir popular opinion.
