Exciting News!

As of June 1, 2018,
DPL will eliminate fines for overdue materials.

On June 1, Decatur Public Library will join the many
Illinois libraries that have become “fine-free.”

What does this mean for Decatur Public Library users?

  • Decatur Public Library cardholders will no longer be charged overdue fines.
  • Any DPL cardholder who wants to check out a book on June 1 or after will have all previous fines forgiven, provided the materials are returned in good condition and the patron has no currently overdue materials.
  • This applies to Decatur Public Library cardholders only, regardless of where they use their card or which library owns the borrowed item(s).
  • If a Decatur Public Library patron has overdue items, his or her card is immediately blocked until the items are renewed or returned and checked in, in good condition.
  • Non-Decatur Public Library cardholders will follow the fine policy set by their home library.
  • Items that are returned in damaged condition will be treated as they have always been, meaning that the cost of repair or replacement will be borne by the patron.
