Summer Reading Program 2018

The 2018 Children’s Summer Reading Program,
Reading Takes You Everywhere,
starts Tuesday, May 29 in the Children’s Department!

The program is open to any child (including pre-readers) with a Decatur Public Library card, or in the care of an adult with a DPL card.

Kids, starting May 29 you can sign up and receive a personal book log to track books read or listened to over the summer.  Set your own personal reading or listening goal for the week, then check out books, go home and read!  Write down the titles read on your book log, come back, and get a sticker and reward! There are 5 goal levels, and 5 sets of rewards, including a bookmark, tattoos, a book bag, food coupons, and a book!

EVERYONE who signs up (plus the adult who brings them) will get a coupon for a FREE book at the Friends of the Library Second Saturday Book Sale.  And everyone who signs up by the end of Saturday, June 9 will be entered into a drawing for a Reading Takes You Everywhere t-shirt!  (Thanks to the Friends of the Library for 70 shirts we can give away!)

Why should kids READ during the summer?

  • It’s FUN!
  • Kids can read what they WANT!
  • Kids can EXPLORE something new — a hobby, sport, craft, or facts they want to learn about.
  • Summer Reading helps prevent the “Summer Slide” — the tendency for kids to forget what they’ve learned and decline in reading level over summer vacation.
